Jason Zan (pictured at left with other volunteers) visited Edmond Summit Rotary to discuss his efforts in Ukraine after watching the Russian invasion of his home country. He saw volunteer opportunities and decided to lend a hand where others might not be able to. He left the United States on April 24 and returned May 23 having worked at the Medyka on the Poland border, and in Lviv, Ukraine, assisting the Cherkasy Urban Institute and sorting and delivering humanitarian aid supplies in the Chernihiv region. Zan was able to assist or directly deliver medical supplies, tourniquets, and military PPE such as knee pads, eye protection, and first aid kits. He is committed to bringing medical aid into the country, supplying clean water to war-affected regions, providing mental health services to traumatized children and adults, and recovering unmarked graves of soldiers and civilians killed in the conflict so they can be returned to their families. Zan plans to return this fall or spring to assist Evaluation 200, using his archaeological experience to help with volunteer grade recovery efforts in recently liberated areas.
