What is Rotary?
Welcome to Rotary, a global network of individuals committed to making the world a better place. Rotary is a humanitarian organization dedicated to service, fellowship, and community involvement. Our members, known as Rotarians, work together to address some of the world's most pressing challenges, including poverty, disease, education, and conflict resolution. Here’s a closer look at what Rotary is all about.
Who We Are
Rotary International is a worldwide organization that was founded in 1905 by Paul P. Harris in Chicago, Illinois. What began as a small group of professionals meeting to discuss shared interests and service to the community has grown into a global force for good, with over 1.2 million members in more than 200 countries and territories around the world.
Our mission is simple: “Service Above Self.” This means we prioritize making a positive impact on the world, focusing on helping others, fostering peace, and promoting goodwill across cultural and professional lines.
Our Values
At the heart of Rotary are the core values that guide our work:
- Service Above Self: We put others' needs before our own, dedicating time and resources to helping communities and individuals in need.
- Fellowship: We build strong, lasting friendships with other like-minded individuals who share a passion for service.
- Integrity: We are committed to high ethical standards in all our work.
- Diversity: We believe in bringing together people from all backgrounds to tackle global challenges.
- Leadership: We encourage the development of leadership skills in our members and in the young people we mentor.
What We Do
Rotary is more than just a club—it’s a worldwide movement focused on humanitarian service. We take action to address a variety of issues, including:
- Peace and Conflict Resolution: Rotary works toward building peaceful communities and resolving conflicts through dialogue and education.
- Disease Prevention and Treatment: From eradicating polio to promoting health and hygiene, we take steps to prevent and treat diseases that affect millions of people globally.
- Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene: We support projects that provide access to clean water, proper sanitation, and hygiene education to improve health and well-being.
- Maternal and Child Health: Rotary supports initiatives that improve the health of mothers and children, ensuring healthier communities for the next generation.
- Education and Literacy: We fund educational programs that enhance literacy and promote learning, ensuring that children and adults alike have access to the opportunities they need to succeed.
- Economic and Community Development: We work to create sustainable economic opportunities through vocational training and community-based development projects.
What Are Rotary Clubs
Rotary operates through local Rotary clubs that meet regularly to plan and execute community service projects. Each club is made up of a diverse group of individuals—business owners, professionals, and community leaders—who are dedicated to making a difference. By working locally, regionally, and globally, Rotary clubs have the collective strength to tackle problems of any scale.

Global Impact

In addition to our work in disease prevention, Rotary is involved in countless projects around the world, such as providing access to clean water in underserved communities, building schools and libraries, and offering medical aid in areas affected by disaster.
Rotary’s Youth Programs
Rotary’s commitment to service goes beyond adult members. We offer a variety of programs to engage young people, including:
- Rotaract: For young adults (ages 18-30) who want to make a difference in their communities and develop leadership skills.
- Interact: A program for teens (ages 12-18) focused on leadership development and community service.
- RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards): A leadership development program designed to empower young people to become the leaders of tomorrow.
